Avoid Sealing Your Floors
One of the easiest ways to dress up a concrete floor is through staining. Although paint can be applied to the surface, staining is a better choice because it embeds the surface and translucently colors the concrete. Paint is subject to chipping, which can leave the surface marred. Two types of stains are available: acid-based and water-based. Acid stains react with the concrete to produce natural variations that will give your floors a unique look that can mimic the appearance of different types of natural stone. Colors are limited to earth tones and soft blue-green hues.
Even within that limited color palette, you have some options that will give you exciting designs. These include:
• Layering stains to create unique color combinations
• Applying multiple colors
• Using stencils and templates to create custom graphics
• Create faux finishes by applying stain with sponges or brushes
• Combine with engraving or stamping patterns to mimic wood or other surfaces
